Bad Dog Factory

Shared tools, real mechanical ownership

Inside our Akron workshop, unhoused neighbors take up wrenches, true wheels, and rebuild donated bicycles. We run on shared labor and mutual respect, turning idle afternoons into durable transportation.

Collaborative rebuild

Free street deployment

Akron residents drop off surplus commuter bicycles, puncture-resistant tires, inner tubes, and metric hand tools directly at our Broad Street workshop bays.

Unhoused mechanics disassemble bottom brackets, replace frayed brake cables, overhaul bearings, and adjust derailleurs alongside neighborhood volunteers over hot pots of tea.

Road-tested bicycles exit the shop equipped with U-locks, headlights, and front cargo racks, assigned freely to unhoused community members for reliable city mobility.

Shop Capabilities

Three active repair stations

Every workstation is organized for low-barrier practical utility, giving neighbors the hardware and space required to solve daily physical challenges.

Cold-weather gear mending

Open workbench access

Four heavy-duty floor stands stocked with spoke wrenches, chain breakers, and truing stands maintain dozens of community bikes traversing Akron every month.

Industrial sewing stations and grommet presses allow neighbors to reinforce canvas tarps, patch nylon sleeping bags, and repair heavy winter coats against freezing temperatures.

Unrestricted bench space equipped with soldering irons, basic carpentry hand tools, and hardware fasteners supports personal fabrication and utility repairs without institutional intake.

Keep our workshop benches stocked

We accept working bike frames, metric shop tools, inner tubes, and heavy thread spools weekly at our Broad Street facility.
